Cyril Morin
Music has given me the opportunity to meet extraordinary people, musicians, musical directors, film directors, actors, painters, dansers... Each of these artists carries an artistic world within him that has broadened my horizons and has given me the space and spectrum to go a step further with my own work.
Cyril Morin was born in Blois in 1962 and started learning music at the age of 6. He had a true ability to learn music and soon became quite bored with the strict atmosphere of the music academy he attended, so he quickly took up the guitar on his own to develop a somewhat different perspective. Late at night he would listen to Radio France's FM station : rock, jazz, classical in the late 70s. He also spent a lot of his free time at the movies, regularly attending the Studio movie theatre, that showed many of the old film icons such as those directed by Truffaut, Kurosawa, Scorsese etc...

At 14 he discovered the Blues and learned to play the licks and solo parts by heart with his ear glued to his little Philips player. One day, a friend gave him an old guitar, to which he added a self-made amp and joined various bands for a few years until finally he met and played with the RANXEROK band that had their small moment of fame and glory on a French television programme in 1982. Later on, he decided to pursue a solo career and produced a few singles for himself and for a few other artist freinds. He wrote, composed, co-wrote his own video clips and designed his own record sleeves. He also began to take an active part in the french production scene of Dance Music. Nothing to write home about, but he spent a lot of time in recording studios, television studios, and was generally learning the tools of his trade as the years went by.

Around 1989, after a few years spent performing in various gigs, recording a few albums, composing for advertising and tv idents, even nights composing last minute pieces during a session, he was still searching for his own style. Musicians such as Brian Eno or Philippe Glass gave him the inspiration to break away. This was only the beginning of his musical career that he couldn't quite yet define but that gave birth to the album "DISTANCE".

That same year his wish to go back to musical basics led him to join a young musical director, then a student with Serguei Célibidache, with whom he wrote many pieces and who even introduced him to the Maestro & that he followed around for a while in Paris and in Munich. Thanks to this friendship, he was able to learn a great deal about orchestral instruments.

Because of these new influences, he hesitated for a while between a classical career and a more personal musical impression. He decided to bring them both together in a new perspective.

This conclusive experience can be heard in his composition titled "Bal de l'Eau" (1993), inspired by the early XXth century with it's ballets and candid titles, that was played in public in Paris that year.

He carried on his search for new sounds and consequently composed the album "FLOOD" (1995) using solo instruments like the flute, the violin, the vibraphone and the basoon built into the mix with sampled sounds. His pieces titled SPIRALES composed for the flute, are performed at the Strasbourg festival in 95.

He then composed 3 string quatuor pieces for the album "STRING QUARTET" (1997) to which he added the music for the short feature film KAAL, filmed in India and that received many international rewards at various film festivals. The film was frequently shown at the Parisian Cinemathèque as well as at the London Film Festival.

In 1997, he composed the soundtrack for the television film "UNE VIE POUR UNE AUTRE", then for the series titled "LES PEDIATRES" and more recently for this year's tv saga "TRAMONTANE".

This year, he also composed the music of a dream titled ONE OF MY DREAMS, very much like a film score, the album is a symphonic piece with a technological edge, produced between Sofia, Paris and London. At the same time, SONY has re-released some of his tracks on a compilation CD with other artists titled "Musique & Nature".

Music has always led Cyril to meet new people and to encounter new atmospheres. He has certainly been able to create innovative musical ambiences and has opened the doors to new musical concepts. Behind each of these doors there has always been a world or the representation of one that was yet to be discovered... & that will eventually generate new options and directions for the future.
